UGE-207 Universal Gauge Emulator

Connects virtual any Modbus, 4-20 mA or HART instrument to the BPM fieldbus

The UGE-207-Connect is a versatile Gauge Emulator that seamlessly connects 4-20 mA, HART or Modbus instruments to the robust Honeywell-Enraf BPM fieldbus. Integration of the instrument data into the Honeywell-Enraf CIU Tank Gateway is greatly simplified by emulating the Honeywell-Enraf GPU protocol.

The UGE-207-Connect is specifically designed for LPG bullet tank, additive tank and process tank applications, supporting relevant tank data for radar level gauge, single spot average product and vapor temperature and vapor pressure transmitters. The UGE-207-Connect BASE license supports assigning a total of four Modbus data inputs to a maximum of four emulated gauges. The PLUS license extends to a total of 12 Modbus data inputs to a maximum of five emulated gauges and the PREMIUM license 20 Modbus data inputs to a maximum of six emulated gauges.

The UGE-207 features two ports: a BPM fieldbus port for connection to the CIU Tank Gateway and a RS232/RS485 Modbus RTU master port for connecting the Modbus instruments. The Modbus RTU port also allows integration of 4-20 mA analog input Modbus RTU modules or Modbus/HART Gateway into the solution. This enables connection of instruments with a 4-20 mA or HART output.

The UGE-207 can be commissioned via the RS232/RS485 port or with a temporarily installed UCI-108 Universal Communication Interface. Commissioning process is made easy by a smart configuration wizard. Additionally, it is possible to remotely set the key configuration items via the GPU protocol, e.g., through Honeywell-Enraf Engage.

Applications

  • LPG bullet and spheric tanks
  • Additive and process tanks
  • Both new installation and revamping market

Connect 4-20mA devices to the UGE-207 Gauge Emulator

This example shows the setup of a UGE-207 to emulate a single-level gauge for a tank equipped with a 4-20 mA level gauge, average product spot temperature, vapour spot temperature and P3 vapor pressure transmitters. These are integrated into a Honeywell-Enraf CIU, such as the CIU888. Refer to the figure below for the system overview.

The 4-20 mA level gauge (L-1), spot temperature sensors (Tp-1 and Tg-1), and the pressure (P3) transmitters are connected to the UGE-207 via a 4 channel Modbus remote Analog Input Module. If Intrinsically Safe transmitters are used, the installation of appropriate Safety Barriers in each analog input line is mandatory.

The Modbus registers of the remote Analog Input Module, which reflect the analog input values, are read by the UGE-207. These values are scaled and mapped to the corresponding GPU variables of the emulated gauge. The UGE-207 is connected to the Honeywell-Enraf CIU via the BPM field bus, allowing all variables from the level gauge, spot temperature sensors, and vapor pressure transmitters to be requested by the CIU through the appropriate Honeywell-Enraf GPU records and items.

Depending on the installation location (on-tank or in a Safe Area), the UGE-207, Modbus remote Analog Input Module, Safety Barriers, and Power Supply are housed in either an Ex d enclosure or a standard IP65 enclosure.

Connect HART devices to the UGE-207 Gauge Emulator

This next example shows the setup of a UGE-207 setup to emulate a single-level gauge for a tank equipped with a HART level gauge, average product spot temperature, vapour temperature and P3 vapor pressure transmitters to integrate into the Honeywell-Enraf CIU, such as the CIU888. See figure below for the system overview.

The HART level gauge (L-1), spot temperature sensors (Tp-1 and Tg-1), and the pressure transmitter (P3) are connected to the UGE-207 via a single Modbus/HART Gateway. Generally, up to four 4-20 mA transmitters can be connected to a HART field bus. When using Intrinsically Safe HART transmitters, a proper Safety Barrier on the HART field bus is mandatory.

In this setup, the Modbus registers of the Modbus/HART Gateway, which reflect the primary values of the HART transmitters, are read by the UGE-207, scaled, and mapped to the corresponding GPU variables of the emulated gauge. These variables can then be requested by the CIU.

The advantages of using a Modbus/HART Gateway over a Modbus remote Analog Input Module include no loss of accuracy due to digital HART communication and the need for only one Safety Barrier for the entire HART field bus.

Connect HART devices via multiple HART Gateways to the UGE-207 Gauge Emulator

This example extends the previous one, demonstrating a UGE-207 setup to emulate multiple level gauges across multiple tanks, all equipped with HART transmitters. Refer to the figure below for a system overview.

Depending on the UGE-207 license, the number of connected transmitters and their associated variables can be increased, as well as the number of Emulated Gauges. This example illustrates a setup with two tanks, each equipped with an individual Modbus/HART Gateway and four connected transmitters, resulting in a total of 8 variables and two Emulated Gauges. The UGE-207 PLUS license supports up to 3 tanks. The system can be further expanded by adding additional Modbus/HART Gateways and upgrading to the PREMIUM UGE-207 license, which supports up to 20 variables and six Emulated Gauges within a single UGE-207 device.

In this setup, the UGE-207, Modbus/HART Gateways, and Safety Barriers are generally assembled in a standard IP65 enclosure and installed at a central location in the Safe Area near the tanks.
